A warranty is a form of insurance policy. If the car breaks down, or suffers mechanical failure of parts covered, the warranty will pay for replacement parts and labour.
WHAT'S ON OFFER AND WHERE ?
Franchised main dealers often offer manufacturer-backed schemes. Independent dealers may include a warranty with approved stock. Some retailers offer a warranty as a separate package, if it's not already part of the deal. You can also buy an 'after-market' warranty independently if you are purchasing a car from a private seller or wish to buy some peace of mind for your current car.
 Manufacturer warranties
Manufacturer schemes are usually the most comprehensive. Most of the Warranty package (cars under 2 years old/ 50,000 Kilometers) includes most mechanical and electrical parts, 'cat', tyres, damage to mirrors, number plates, and aerial - even optional accident cover.
 Is a warranty worth it?
Yes - but always read the small print. Find out exactly what is covered or excluded, and what circumstances invalidate the policy. All warranties are not similar - the best manufacturers' used car assurance schemes differ greatly from loophole-filled third-party offers available from some shady back-street dealers. Remember - if a dealer's terms don't impress, you can sign up with independent schemes.
